Passage for Reading & Comprehension: Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire. Kautilya, his advisor, wrote the Arthasastra, a guide to statecraft and governance. Chandragupta Maurya defeated the Nanda Dynasty. He and his son Bindusara and grandson Ashoka expanded the empire. After a bloody war, Ashoka adopted Buddhism and promoted peace, non-violence, and welfare. However, the empire declined after Ashoka’s death. Iron tools helped farmers work better; they could prepare more land for growing crops and get more food. Religious values were spread through rock inscriptions. Ashoka’s death marked the beginning of the end of the Mauryan Empire. The Andhra Dynasty emerged as a major power from its downfall.
