Why do many candidates choose Political Science as an optional subject?
Duration: Approximately 20–25 minutes (probably because I was among the first candidates)
Chairman: Mr. Imran Nasir (Member PPSC)
I entered the room and greeted the panel with Assalamualaikum.
The Chairman immediately commented:
“Why are you sitting after opening your button? Why are you so conscious about your button? Be casual. You would look better if you sat properly with your button closed.”
I replied:
“Sure, sir, I’ll keep that in mind.”
Introduction
They asked for my introduction.
Chairman’s Questions
The Chairman asked:
“Why did you choose Zoology? Usually people choose Zoology when they don’t get admission elsewhere.”
The second member agreed with the Chairman, and they questioned me further on this.
I responded that I chose Zoology out of personal interest and that I had opportunities in other departments but intentionally chose this field.
Then they asked:
“What has Zoology improved in you?”
I explained a few skills and perspectives I developed through the subject.
The Chairman then moved toward CSS-related questions:
Did you appear in CSS?
What were your optional subjects?
After hearing my subjects, he commented:
“General Studies in CSS and Social Work in PMS are not usually considered scoring or preferred subjects. Why did you choose them?”
Then he asked:
“What improvement did General Studies bring to you?”
He also discussed Political Science and asked:
Montesquieu’s spelling
His theory
I answered correctly.
Then he asked about Thomas (name not fully recalled). I could not answer.
He said:
“You should know this.”
He asked the date of the USA Constitution. I could not recall it and asked:
“Sir, should I make a guess?”
He replied:
“You should know that, and no, you can’t guess.”
Then he asked about Criminology and its schools of thought, which I answered.
Second Member’s Questions
The second member asked:
What is Local Government (LG)?
Under which Act does it work?
Why is it called the third tier of government?
What is the difference between PERA and Municipal Officer?
I answered these questions.
Third Member’s Questions
The third member asked something I could not answer, so I apologized.
Then he gave a hypothetical situation:
“You are appointed as Chief Officer. You have no resources, no funds, and only 100 days. How will you improve the system? Make your strategy on the board.”
I presented my strategy on the board.
They appreciated some of my points and also added their own suggestions.
I replied:
“Okay sir, I’ll keep your points in mind.”
They asked me to sit again.
Fourth Member’s Questions
Usually, in my experience, only three members ask questions while the fourth observes, but this time all members participated.
Questions included:
What is a social safeguard?
Explain in depth.
I answered briefly and then said:
“Sorry sir, I don’t know it in that much detail.”
Then they asked:
What is procurement?
Under which law does it work?
Explain further.
How does the process work?
I explained what I knew and drew a broad explanation as well, but for deeper details I said:
“Sorry, sir, I do not know it in that much depth.”
Finally, they said:
“You may leave.”
I said Assalamualaikum and left.
Besides these, there were around 5–6 additional questions that I do not remember now
